BIOGRAPHY :

Jérôme, who would later become BROKEN BACK was born in August 1990 in Saint-Malo, France, where he lived a happy childhood.
He played his first notes at an early age, learning classical music and jazz with an unconventional instrument: the tuba. His brilliant school career enabled him to enter one of the best French business schools, where he specialized in entrepreneurship, management, digital strategy and communication.
At only 23, he had already co-founded 2 start-ups and seemed destined for a bright future. But in 2012 a displaced vertebra forced him to ease off the pace for several months.
Inspired to take his nylon guitar out of the closet, Jérôme began writing and recording his first songs.
Then he launched his Soundcloud, Facebook, and Youtube pages to post his first demos freshly finalised. A loyal fan base started to grow. Youtube channels in France and abroad (Get The Sound, The Vibe Guide…) and influent blogs discovered his folk – pop electronic universe. They started to write about him and to broadcast his tracks, widening day after day his community. Famous Dj’s (Klingande, Kygo, Thomas Jack) contacted him for remixes. The demo of the song “Seven words” hit 500 000 plays.
At the same time, business angels and various opportunities to raise funds for his start-ups showed up. But, instead, Jérôme decided to embrace this nascent music career.
Then he caught a train from Paris to Saint-Malo, as described in “Happiest Man On Earth”: “I belong to the roads now, coming home to my old town […] I think I am the happiest man on earth”, in order to improve the production of his songs thanks to the tutorials he found on Youtube, and finalised his first EP “Dear Misfortune, Mother of Joy”.
Explicit reference to this musical project, that would have probably never started without this physical burnout, that “broke his back” some two years earlier.

RELEASE INFORMATION :

This First EP « Dear Misfortune, Mother of Joy » echoes a quote of the famous writer Albert Cohen « Le malheur est le père du bonheur de demain ».
« Mild Blood » describes the addiction to a doomed romance whereas “Happiest Man On Earth” depicts the consciousness of a stealth second of happiness. “Halcyon Birds” extends a metaphor about the second chance, inspired by the eponymous Greek myth. Whereas “Young Souls” evokes the childhood paradox: between youthful carelessness and eagerness to be grown-ups.
The smooth and catchy melodies are filled with hope. The dancing electro rhythms are full of carefree waves, like those of living the city, flee the preordained paths and decide one’s own fate. But the choir and folk arpeggios entrusts us with some deeper sadness like an echo to this physical accident and this forced professional break, without which the project BROKEN BACK would never have seen the light.
Mixed by Broken Back, Pierrick Devin (former assistant of Philippe Zdar, known for his work with Lilly Wood & the Prick), and N’to (Considered by many as one of the major rising producer on the deep house & minimal French scene), the four tracks of “Dear Misfortune, Mother of Joy” are like an anthem to this 1990 generation. Everything is recorded in a student’s room. No professional studio. No additional musicians. 100% home production.
This first EP sounds like a borderless melody, embodying a generation that doesn’t assume any barriers between the continents. A radiant generation, born among the ashes of the prevailing crisis, and yet bursting with an unfailing optimism. A generation to which it feels good, sometimes, to look towards.
